8 Things We Learned About 'The Amazing Spider-Man'

spider-man

"The Amazing Spider-Man" was released Tuesday and is already shattering box-office records.

In two days, the Spider-Man reboot has grossed $59.3 million at theaters. Though that comes nowhere close to "The Avengers"two-day gross of $150.3 million, Spider-Man's well on its way to beating out the film's $207.4 million opening weekend.

Now, that you've seen the film, take a look at what didn't make it into the final cut, what role Anne Hathaway nearly had and what Sony has planned for the sequels.

We've gathered bits from a recent SuperHeroHype interview with Spider-Man producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, IMDB and from our own comic knowledge.

The new Spider-Man franchise will be a trilogy (at the least).

Producer Matt Tolmach revealed to SuperHeroHype there are at "least three" more spidey films in the works.

The film's Facebook page also wasn't keeping word of more sequels any secret:

“It’s finally here! The Amazing Spider-Man is the first installment in a movie trilogy that will explore how our fave hero’s journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents.”

Dr. Connors isn't the only "Lizard."

Dr. Connors was the Lizard in this film; however, in the comics he unwillingly gave his son, Billy Connors, a dose of the Lizard formula. Little Connors then became known as Lizard Jr.

Anne Hathaway was originally supposed to star in "The Amazing Spider-Man."

Before landing the coveted role of Catwoman/Selina Kyle in "The Dark Knight Rises," Hathaway was set to play a different feline.

The actress was originally to play Black Cat/Felicia Hardy in "The Amazing Spider-Man."

Instead, she'll play cat and mouse with the Caped Crusader.

'Dark Knight' Can't Rise Above 'Spider-Man' In China Theaters

Batman's no match for Spider-Man at the box office ... in China.

According to Variety, "The Amazing Spider-Man" out earned "The Dark Knight Rises" by more than a million dollars on the film's opening day Monday.

Sony's "Amazing Spider-Man" reboot grossed $5.4 million compared to Warner Bros. $4.5 million total for the final film in its Batman franchise.

Spider-man has an additional 415 theaters, 3-D screenings and a shorter viewing time (Spidey is nearly a half hour shorter than "TDKR" allowing for more screenings) to thank for its win over The Dark Knight.

Despite not beating out Spidey, "TDKR" does take the title of highest 2D opening for a Warner Bros. film in China, knocking out all of the films from the Harry Potter franchise.

Both movies premiered the same day in an effort by China Film Group, who oversees distribution of imported films, to limit the effect of U.S. films on the country's box office.

In the United States, "The Dark Knight Rises" opened to a weekend estimate of $160 million, nearly $100 million more than "The Amazing Spider-Man"earned domestically its first weekend.

However, the Caped Crusader is still beating the web slinger in total gross revenue overseas, and is inching closer and closer to hitting the billion dollar mark.

Let's look at a head-to-head of the figures side-by-side:

"The Dark Knight Rises"                "The Amazing Spider-Man"

Opening Weekend (US):                  $161 million                                       $62 million

Domestic Gross:                             $422 million                                        $258 million

Foreign:                                             $519 million                                        $446.5 million

Worldwide:                                        $941 million                                        $704.8 million

James Franco Explains Why Studios Keep Remaking Superhero Films

james franco spider-man harryCritics weren't wowed by "Man Of Steel," calling Henry Cavill's Superman "brooding" and offering hit-or-miss ratings on Rotten Tomatos (56 percent of reviewers liked it as of Wednesday morning).

Fans are chomping at the bit, rewarding "Man Of Steel" with glowing reviews and handing over a record-breaking $128.6 million at the box office over opening weekend.

If you haven't made up your mind about director Zack Snyder's reboot, let cinephile James Franco do it for you.

Franco reviewed "Man Of Steel" for Vice magazine on Tuesday, deeming it "a great film."

"It delivers everything it should. It made Superman cool again," Franco wrote. "It delivered great action and interesting characters with a plot that was grounded enough to make us care a little."

Henry Cavil

Franco said he overcame childhood prejudices against the "cheesiness of the character’s suit and his douchey invincibility"—applauding Cavill's performance and Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan's ability to keep the story focused and fresh.

Of course, Franco also put on his philosopher's hat.

He criticized the film industry's obsession with rebooting film franchises.

"When movies become so big that they can make $200 million in one weekend like 'The Avengers' did," Franco wrote, "everyone from studios to filmmakers are going to want to get in on making comic-book movies."

He adds:

"We are just wowed by the money that brings them to fruition. Kids like comic-book-style heroes, teens like flashy action and sex, and therefore these films make money. Adults—the third audience—respect money. So these films are made. Again and again. And if Brandon Routh doesn’t work as Superman, or if Sam Raimi can’t agree on the villain for a fourth 'Spider-Man,' they will just make new versions without them."

Prior to "Man of Steel," Brandon Routh put on the blue and red suit in 2006 in "Superman Returns," a role for which Cavill also auditioned.

This pattern hits close to home for Franco. A long, long time ago — in 2002 — he brought Peter Parker's best friend and later nemesis Harry Osborn out of comic books and onto the big screen in director Sam Raimi's three-part "Spider-Man."

tobey macguire spider-man 3

Last summer, director Marc Webb's reboot "The Amazing Spider-Man" reeled in more than $260 million — still less than any of Raimi's original trilogy

Monday, Sony announced release dates for "The Amazing Spider-Man 3' and '4,' stretching the franchise into 2018, while the sequel is still in production.

For Franco, the "original" series feels like yesterday.

"The new Spider-Man series ... arose even before there was time to bury the corpse of the old one and enshroud it in the haze of nostalgia," Franco wrote. "I don’t really feel much distress over its being remade, for many reasons, but what is interesting to me is that it has been remade so quickly — and the reasons why."

Money, money, money.

Shailene Woodley Cut As 'Spider-Man' Love Interest In Sequel

shailene woodley

Fans excited to see Shailene Woodley portray iconic Spider-Man character Mary Jane Watson in next year's sequel may have to wait for "The Amazing Spider-Man 3."

The Wrap reports scenes with Woodley as Spidey's red-headed love interest have been cut from the film.

Woodley previously confirmed to Entertainment Weekly her character was cut from the sequel.

"Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film," said Woodley.

According to The Wrap, director Marc Webb decided to remove Woodley's character in order to streamline the film.

In other words, it sounds like the cast of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" became too crowded.

In addition to Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone returning respectively as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Gwen Stacey, there have been plenty of additions to the cast.

The next film will have at least three villains. Paul Giamatti (Rhino) and Jamie Foxx (Electro) will occupy Spidey's time along with Chris Cooper who was confirmed to play the Green Goblin.

But that's not all.

Amazing Spider-Man-Andrew Garfield-Emma StoneDane DeHaan announced on Twitter he'll show up as Peter Parker's best friend Harry Osborn (not sure why he was left out of the first film).

Felicity Jones was also added to the cast as rumored Felicia Hardy/Black Cat, a former burglar-turned-sidekick to Spider-Man. (She's basically Marvel's version of Catwoman.)

In the "Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane" comic series, Hardy transfers to Parker's high school. In the Marvel universe, she has often pined after the web slinger.

With Woodley's addition, that would have left Spidey juggling three females.

In addition, The Wrap reports Woodley's role as Mary Jane may have to be recast since she'll most likely be busy filming a sequel to next year's "Divergent"— a movie somethink may be the next "Hunger Games" success.

It's unclear how much of a presence Woodley had in the upcoming film. The actress has been photographed filming multiple scenes with Garfield.

New 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' Poster Hints At Multiple Villains

Sony Pictures has finally released a high quality version of its action-packed "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" triptych poster which features not one, but three villains.

If you're a fan of Spider-Man, you've probably seen shots of this poster circulating around the Internet.

The poster reveal comes two days ahead of the film's first trailer.

Let's take a closer look at each villain.

We know what you're thinking — it's "Spider-Man 3" all over again.

It's no secret fans weren't pleased with the seemingly overstuffed abundance of villains in Sam Raimi's 2007 flick starring Tobey Maguire which had Spider-Man facing off against the Sandman, Venom, AND the Green Goblin.

However, it looks like this is a slow introduction to Spidey's main villain group, the Sinister Six — something we've always figured since the first film.

The group is comprised of members who have ranged from Electro, Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Sandman, and Kraven the Hunter to appearances by Mysterio, Venom, and Vulture, and the Lizard (who was in "The Amazing Spider-Man"). At times, the group has been headed by Norman Osborn who was briefly hinted at during the end of the first film.

Their introduction would make sense with the recently announced future Spider-Man spinoff movies.

Sony Pictures Entertainment chief Michael Linton told analysts last month "a number of scripts [are] in the works."

Sony also released an updated synopsis for the film highlighting the entry of character Harry Osborn:

We’ve always known that Spider-Man’s most important battle has been within himself: the struggle between the ordinary obligations of Peter Parker and the extraordinary responsibilities of Spider-Man. But in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker finds that a greater conflict lies ahead.

It’s great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there’s no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than he. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp.

Sony Pictures and Marvel rolled out a few new international posters for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and they're awesome.

Both highlight showdowns between Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) and villain Electro (Jamie Foxx).

It kind of reminds us of this one Disney and Marvel released for "Iron Man 3"— without the worries of our hero in (too much) danger.

The only difference is that in the one below, Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark looks defeated. Above, Spidey looks like he's just getting started.iron man 3 tony stark Here's the second poster via Digital Spy which gives a glimpse of the villain from Spider-Man's point of view.amazing spiderman poster

It Looks Like 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' Is Changing An Iconic Comic Scene

$

We have seen a lot of trailers for "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and we still have another few months until its May release.

Sony just put out a new international trailer for the film that shows NYC getting torn apart. However, any eagle-eyed viewers will be quick to notice that it also gives away a potentially huge spoiler for the film. It appears Sony is taking liberties with altering an iconic comic book moment in Spidey history.

First, check out the trailer below:

Warning: Major potential spoilers follow:

In the new film, three new villains will join Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man: Electro (Jamie Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti), and the Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan).

Fans of the comic will know Gwen Stacy (played by Emma Stone) dies during a big iconic battle between Spider-Man and the Green Goblin. A scene hinting at this very storyline has been teased throughout recent trailers, but in this latest one it appears the film may be altering that scenario.

In the The Amazing Spider-Man issue 121, the Green Goblin abducts Gwen Stacey and she gets caught in a battle between both he and Spider-Man.

Here's how it plays out:Spiderman gwen stacy death

The Green Goblin tosses Stacy off a bridge and Spider-Man thinks he saves her by using his spidey web to catch her by her legs. Unbeknownst to him, Stacy's neck snaps in the process, instantly killing her.

Here's a similar scene in the new trailer that takes place in what appears to be some sort of clock tower. Notice Stone is wearing a similar outfit to the one in the comic.

Here's the Goblin with Stone.green goblin gwen stacy the amazing spider man 2

Will Stacy live to see another sequel?

It's a fair question to ask. Originally, Shailene Woodley was going to join this film as Mary Jane Watson — another love interest for Spidey. However, her role was cut out of the final film

For the storyline to continue, it makes sense for Stacy's character to eventually pass away.

Stone has previously hinted to Ryan Seacrest that her character's storyline will stay close to the comics.

“I think the intention the whole time has been to tell Gwen’s story has closely to the comic as possible," said Stone.

How A Schoolyard Bully Helped Andrew Garfield Become Spider-Man

The Amazing Spider Man 2Even the Amazing Spider-Man can be a victim of bullying.

In an interview with The Guardian, Andrew Garfield — the actor who plays Spider-Man in the upcoming "Amazing Spider-Man 2"— explains how he was bullied as a child.

"I enjoyed my childhood, though looking back on school, that was both great and awful," he told the British newspaper.

Garfield, who was born in Los Angeles but grew up in England, mentioned that being "stupidly sensitive" made him a target for bullies.

"I had the general bullying experience where there was a kid who wasn't very happy and he threw his weight around," Garfield said. "He targeted me because I was skinny and thin-skinned and he knew it."

But the bad experience at school led Garfield to delve into comics books, specifically the famous web-slinger he would one day go on to play.

"If it weren't for that bully, I wouldn't have found Spider-Man," he said. "That's why I got so lost in the comics and the cartoon series. I would fantasize about being him."

The 30-year-old added, "It is really interesting, though ... what you perceive as your wounds can later on turn into the biggest gifts you have."

Garfield will host SNL on May 3, while "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" swings into theaters May 2.

This Deleted 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' End-Credits Scene Gives A Huge Hint At The Next Sequel

$

amazing spider man 2 gwen stacy andrew garfield

Apparently, there are a lot of scenes that didn’t make it into "The Amazing Spider-Man 2."

We know Shailene Woodley’s Mary Jane didn’t make the cut, but there was also supposed to be a scene that ran somewhere during the credits alluding to the direction of “The Amazing Spider-Man 3.”

Some spoilers from “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” follow.

If you’ve seen the film, you know Norman Osborn (Chris Cooper) passes away from an incurable illness in the film. It’s that same illness that gets passed along to his son Harry (Dane DeHaan), and leads to his eventual turn as the Green Goblin.

Before the movie’s release, we heard a lot about an anticipated end-credits sequence showing Norman Osborn’s head cryogenically frozen in a jar after his death. We were pretty psyched about it; however, moviegoers will know it’s nowhere in the sequel or afterward in the credits.

Here’s how the scene plays out, according to GeekTyrant:

The “Man in the Shadows” / Gustav Fiers (Michael Massee) we’ve seen in both the first film and second speaking with the Osborns is seen walking up to Norman Osborn’s head and saying “Wake up old friend” before walking away.

norman osborn head amazing spider-man 2Here's a closer look:norman osborn frozen head

It would have been a perfect end-credits sequence showing that the character may still be in play in the future. Also, it’s interesting that we see him in chamber 3. That suggests he’s part of the Sinister Six crew.

As seen in the film, there are, at least, six chambers in Oscorp headquarters storing gear for future Spidey villains.the amazing spider man 2 sinister six

Instead of the Norman Osborn scene, you'll see one from the upcoming "X-Men: Days of Future Past" featuring Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) due to a deal between Sony and Fox.

6 Huge Hints The President Of Marvel Dropped About Their Next Phase Of Films

$
0
0

thor captain america avengers

This week, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was on hand at the CineEurope conference in Barcelona, and he brought a lot of goodies along with him.

In addition to a reel of footage showcasing Guardians Of The Galaxy, he had some updates on six different areas of the empire that were in production. On any other day, this would be played off as a standard advertising tactic, but this is Marvel Studios we're talking about here. This is the studio who hit a massive bump in the road with Edgar Wright's departure from Ant-Man and made a lot of digital ink with critics and analysts wondering if Marvel's salad days had wilted away.

Make no mistake about it, Kevin Feige knew that this presentation needed to be nothing short of marvelous in order to restore a degree of confidence to the public. Comic readers and moviegoers alike have been scratching their heads over the fate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Feige tried to assure fans that all is well in their universe, despite some unwanted shake ups. Did he succeed or did he just dig himself a deeper hole? Well, you'll be able to judge for yourself, as we jump into six focus points the Marvel Studios bigwig hit upon in his speech.

1. Ant Man Is Still A Mess, But Making Progress

ant man With Peyton Reed and Adam McKay taking over the Ant-Man project after Edgar Wright's unfortunate departure, the public opinion on the project has been less than stellar. For a good long while, Marvel Studios seemed to have avoided conflicts of interest between itself and its creative artists, but with this incident currently in focus any movement is questioned with a heavy amount of scrutiny. Thankfully, Kevin Feige remarked on the current state of the project, and the status update is more hopeful than we'd thought, particularly with this remark about how much work Adam McKay would have ahead of him:

Adam McKay, a very good writer, is reworking parts of the script - not the entirety of the script, but some of it - and it's going to, we believe, come to life in the best version of Ant-Man that we could possibly make.

While using Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish's script as the foundation for Ant-Man might seem like a slap in the face to some, it's as good of a tribute to the long and hard road that Wright walked for so many years in trying to bring the project to the screen. With new details coming at a regular interval and the cast still in tact (despite their disappointment that they won't get to work with the British funster), Ant-Man does seem like it'll make its release date without a hitch. Provided no one else decides to quit, that is. While Ant-Man is the current face of Phase 3, Doctor Strange is the character that could be the next Iron Man of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

2. We'll Probably Know Who's Playing Doctor Strange By August

Doctor StrangeThe next Phase 3 film to swing into high gear is that of the master of the mystic arts, Doctor Strange himself. With the recent news of director Scott Derrickson signing on, the project is finding its legs so to speak. With Kevin Feige expressing the importance of telling stories from the supernatural side of Marvel comics, he gave this update on just where the film is heading at this very moment:

We're about to hire a writer to redo a draft, and we think we'll be casting probably in the next month or two, and announcing an actor, and then we get into production in the spring of next year."

Considering Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch are the latest names to swirl around the casting pool, it wouldn't be a surprise if Feige announced one of the two of them being the human form of Steven Strange. Of course, seeing as this is nothing more than rumor and speculation, Marvel and Derrickson could always throw a curveball and cast a complete unknown/low recognition actor in the role. After all, it worked for Chris Hemsworth and he's not Thor about it. A lot of goodwill and fence mending is going on at the Marvel Studios camp, especially with one remark Mr. Feige made in reference to the Sony and Fox contingents of the Marvel dynasty. More on that in a bit, but first, a Guardians of the Galaxy update!

3. Guardians Of The Galaxy Is Definitely Franchise Bait

peter quill guardians of the galaxyWe all know The Avengers can't go on forever, and even if it does, there's still the matter of certain areas of Marvel's comic canon that are inaccessible through the relatively grounded approach of that series and its heroes. Naturally, Guardians Of The Galaxy is Marvel's gateway to the stars, and Kevin Feige told the audience that should this film succeed, there's plenty more where that came from. However, he did stipulate that good news with the following:

There are definitely places we can take it and we have ideas of where we'd like to go with it, but really all the energy goes into the first movie first. "

While this is a money making enterprise, it's good to know that Feige and Marvel Studios aren't rushing to print money off of the back of Guardians Of The Galaxy just yet. While they do seem optimistic about certain characters breaking out into their own films, they've been stung with set backs before (The Incredible Hulk, anyone?) and know the value of playing the wait and see game. Of course, Guardians Of The Galaxy also opens the door wide open for the proper entrance of a character that's been teased so frequently in the past couple of years: Thanos.

4. Thanos And The Infinity Gauntlet Are An Avengers End Game

the infinity gauntlet

It's been assumed ever since his appearance in the mid-credit tag for The Avengers that Thanos would be a big bad for Earth's mightiest heroes to eventually square off against. With the Tesseract's first appearance and the Aether popping up in Thor: The Dark World, fans quickly put together the pieces and surmised that a future installment of The Avengers would deal with the completion of the Infinity Gauntlet. While we didn't get a confirmation on his ultimate goal, Kevin Feige had this to say about what Thano's role would be in Guardians Of The Galaxy and beyond:

We see him again in this movie [Guardians], we learn a little bit more about him in this movie, and he - and his band of followers - is the biggest piece of connective tissue that will eventually lead us back into Avengers films in the future."

With the announcement that Josh Brolin would be stepping into the role of the power hungry tyrant who has a thing for death, Feige and Marvel Studios pretty much started setting up their throughline towards whichever future Avengers flick will deal with Thanos' end game. Odds are, this might be our Phase 3 swan song, though we do know that Guardians Of The Galaxy will definitely feed into The Avengers 3. To what extent we'll see Thanos wrecking havoc and when we'll be seeing it is at this moment, unforeseen. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is, after all, never short on possible villains – especially when the Netflix/ABC shows will be feeding into the pool as well.

5. The Netflix Universe Will Presumably Connect To The Films

Daredevil cover2014 was the year that Marvel Studios showed that you can have your cake and eat it too as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Captain America: The Winter Solider overlapped with the most ambitious story in the history of both properties: the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. With both the film and the television show feeding into each others' stories, Marvel Studios showed that it's possible to make a television franchise work with a film universe. But can the Netflix shows enjoy the same connection? Feige thinks that not only is it possible, it's also a natural fit:

The most important thing for us with each film is that each film works independently and stands alone as a great movie, and then the fun part is it connecting to the other world; I think the TV group is doing the exact same thing with each series."

Considering the Daredevil series has already casted actors like Vincent D'Onofrio and Rosario Dawson to its roster, the ambitions to cross pollinate the Netflix shows with the film universe (and even possibly the ABC shows) are on the table. It seems like the days of casting two different actors to play the same character through TV and Film are almost a thing of the past, which is great for continuity and promotion.

6. Crossovers Aren't Off The Table (Just Really Difficult To Negotiate)

The Amazing Spider-Man The rift between Marvel StudiosSony, and 20th Century Fox has always been a bit of a source of conflict between the three houses. However, if Kevin Feige had his way, he'd have the entirety of the Marvel canon under one umbrella, or at the very least able to cooperate enough that a crossover event would be possible without any hitches or glitches. While Feige acknowledges that Sony and Fox are doing varying degrees of well with their individual properties, thus making a wholesale buyout of the characters pretty improbable, he offered this quote about the future of the entire Marvel canon:

I wouldn't say anything's impossible, I've been at Marvel for almost 14 years now, and it's a very different company today than when it was a near bankrupt company just trying to get a foothold in movies when I started. So I always say nothing is impossible but I'm not sure that's going to happen any time soon."

Kevin Feige isn't a dumb man. While he's had a couple falling outs and missteps here and there, business ultimately breeds such things as an unfortunate side effect of pursuing a singular vision and making the bottom line a profitable one. To anyone that has any doubts on just how strong Marvel's pull is, this is going to be the one area to watch for future development. He's just offered an olive branch to the outer Marvel cinematic universe, and he's shown that he's willing to play ball to please the fans. What type of terms, conditions, and other legal hells will it require to get to that point? We don't know just yet, but considering he's willing to sit at the table with Sony and Marvel to make something work, and in the name of the company as well as the fans, it seems at least somewhat doable. Feige is making some big moves towards solidifying the universe at large and bringing even more excitement to the Marvel Universe in the (hopefully) near future.

Sony's 'Amazing Spider-Man' Franchise May Be In Big Trouble

amazing spider-man 2

"So what do we do now?" That seems to be the question Sony is asking in the wake of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 . Expectations were high for the film, which ended up being the lowest-grossing in the franchise domestically and worldwide (including the Sam Raimi movies). Now Sony is looking at a release date for a third and fourth film, tentatively set for 2016 and 2018... and apparently reconsidering everything. And even the Spider-Man "braintrust" is wondering what the next step will be.

IGN sat down for an interview with Roberto Orci, one of the members of that group of writers, who revealed that he's very much out of the loop in regards to plans for the next film.

"I don't know what their plans are for that franchise. I don't ever want to say never, but we have to figure out what their scheduling is in terms of when they want each movie. I've read probably as much as anyone else. There's a love for The Sinister Six, the idea of Venom -- there's an idea of Spider-Man's going to be one of these characters that's part of our business. He's such a popular character. Spider-Man's not going to go away any time soon. When it all happens and how and all that has yet to be determined. I don't want to say anything about what they should do. I don't want them to think I'm spilling the beans about something."

That... does not sound promising. Of course, the reason Roberto Orci hasn't been close with Sony lately is because he's prepping Star Trek 3 . Plus, in April it was announced that Orci and Alex Kurtzman will no longer being working on movies together. Ultimately, his input on a Spidey movie coming in 2016 or 2017 was always going to be limited, even though he and writing partner Alex Kurtzman were hired to write that third film. This raises big questions about The Amazing Spider-Man 3, which Orci claims he is, "not officially involved in," and makes us wonder if it might not make its scheduled June 10, 2016 release date.

So what is Sony thinking? The original rumor had them bumping Amazing Spider-Man 3 to 2017. But there was also talk about Drew Goddard beginning work on The Sinister Six in January 2015, suggesting that film was farther ahead and could potentially take Amazing Spider-Man 3's slot. They're apparently still weighing their options, though it does sound, from Orci's tender words, that the wall-crawler could be taking a hiatus.

I imagine Sony is going to act gingerly moving forward. Despite the movie's disappointing numbers in all other categories, Amazing Spider-Man 2 did pull in a half-a-billion dollars exclusively outside of the states, and earnings like that suggest a heavy demand. The problem is that demand is for a character that, so far, only exists in movies that cost upwards of $200 million - with another $150 million plus needed for marketing and promotion. The problems are financial and creative. If Sony is smart, they'll look upon the character's fifty year history to reconsider how the character has been persevered over the years, and a new and improved Spider-Man will hit screens soon. Hopefully, that's not assuming too much.

Why Canceling 'The Sinister Six' Would Be A Bad Idea For Sony's 'Spider-Man' Franchise

Rhino, Amazing Spider-man 2

This weekend, a very loose rumor circulated that Sony was canceling The Sinister Six as a potential spinoff to the troubled Amazing Spider-Man series. That would leave Sony with two (or more, or less!) direct follow-ups to The Amazing Spider-Man, as well as a spinoff featuring the character of Venom. It's unclear what would happen with those three other films. But The Sinister Six should have a leg up, given that much of the not-very-successful The Amazing Spider-Man 2 spent time teasing a villain free-for-all. Sony has made a number of dubious decisions regarding the Spider-Man films. Pulling the plug on The Sinister Six could very well be the worst.

The Sinister Six has been linked to a potential January shoot, to be written and directed by Drew Goddard. It was recently revealed that it would definitely hit theaters before the Alex Kurtzman Venom. And it has been suggested as an able replacement for The Amazing Spider-Man 3, that film in limbo following the dwindling box office numbers of solo Spidey adventures. You could see how Sony would be reluctant to take a chance on extending the brand with a comic book ensemble film featuring lesser-known b-and-c list characters, and villains at that.

Even by default, The Sinister Six is the best of all these ideas. But default isn't necessary. Six mastermind Drew Goddard is one of the hottest, most talented and most desired filmmakers in Hollywood. Like potential Venom director Alex Kurtzman, Goddard came up through JJ Abrams' world of Alias and Lost, becoming an in-demand scribe with scripts like Cloverfield. Unlike Kurtzman, who previously helmed the artificial drama People Like Us, Goddard has actually directed a good movie: his Cabin In The Woods is one of the most purely enjoyable cult classics of the last decade. Goddard's already had to cede the Daredevil Netflix series and the Matt Damon vehicle The Martian for a chance to make The Sinister Six. Clearly, someone's made him a promise.

Sony's got the chance to play in a sandbox that no one's ever seen before. The comic book movies have been so beholden to an already-established mythology that you'd think it were Scripture. But the Spider-Man villains have never really been star attractions in the comics, even though Spidey fights a diverse and colorful band of baddies every week. On one level, you'd be at a loss to think of how they'd function without Spider-Man as the focal point of the story.

On another level, there were the wonderful statements Alex Kurtzman recently said about the film, comparing it to The Wild Bunch and The Wages Of Fear. That's worth noting because the characters in those films are unsavory, but never flat-out evil. You side-eye them, but soon you root for them and their struggles. Decades of film have taught us that it doesn't matter if a protagonist is a saint or a sinner: audiences will cheer a character as long as they are good at their job.

amazing spider-man 2 electroKurtzman's reference points also emphasize that this might not be a "superhero" film, per se, making it a difficult challenge for the studio. But they also illustrate that this could still be a genre film, specifically one that employs a large, skilled ensemble. Why couldn't it be a heist film? A con-man film? Spider-Man is usually confined to New York, but a team of villains could travel the globe. The Sinister Six are coming to New York, but first they have to go on an adventure that takes them to Egypt, Borneo, Shanghai, etc. Maybe they have to fight another classic Spidey rogue, one who is just far too demented for their crew?

They've also got a pretty good foundation thus far. A Venom movie would live or die based on its leading man. The Sinister Six would rely more heavily on writing and characterizations, and those haven't been the strong suit for this series. Raimi's villains were fully dimensional, redeemable figures, and you had the sense the movies actually liked and respected them: witness the sand formation sequence of Spider-Man 3. The newer films have been more callous and dismissive of their baddies, as Lizard was ultimately a monster and Electro a sympathetic loner-turned-special effect. But assuming the Green Goblin and the Rhino are two of the villains, Sony could employ blossoming leading man Dane DeHaan and beloved character actor Paul Giamatti, not to mention Felicity Jones' Felicia Hardy, aka the Black Cat. That's a great start already, leaving you only three more roles to cast.

Which opens the door to Spidey's wonderful coterie of bad guys. What about Quentin Beck, the bitter failed actor-turned-illusionist who turned his special effect-expertise into a preposterous criminal identity as Mysterio? The frustrated scientist Herman Schultz, who becomes a burglar after inventing vibrational gloves that dub him the Shocker? Ex-Nazi Fritz Von Meyer, who picks up beekeeping, only to be karmically ravaged by a batch of mutant bees and turned into the ethereal Swarm? Or perhaps Sergei Kravinoff, the big game hunter known as Kraven who seeks a challenge by hunting Spider-Man for sport, later taking his own life upon achieving his goal of shackling the wall-crawler? And then Dmitri, Kraven's half-brother with shapeshifting abilities known as Chameleon, who plots revenge so insidious it nearly destroys Peter Parker's life? These aren't just seat-fillers – there's meat on these bones, and several Spider-Man villains have arcs appealing to a strong actor. There's also a solid bench, given that ideally there would be sequels.

spiderman 2, big eyesAs far as The Amazing Spider-Man 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man 4, It seem like the jury's spoken in regards to Marc Webb's vision for Spider-Man, bogged down in parental intrigue that interests no one. Andrew Garfield has tried his hardest, but he hasn't been able to make people forget Tobey Maguire. Webb's direction isn't entirely to blame, but this series went from an automatic $300 million plus in America under Raimi to barely hobbling to the $200 million mark with 3D prices. And it's not as if Webb's films spend less money – well, they do, since Amazing Spider-Man 2's reported price-tag of $250 million is lower than the alleged $258 million cost of Spider-Man 3. But that's nobody's idea of cheaper, particularly since Sony spent a raftload on promoting the latest film. Webb had a LOT of help to make a smash, and this movie wasn't that: unfortunately Spider-Man is too fragile a property to just dump one director for another, especially with the tight release date frame.

And the character of Venom is wardrobe: audiences have no warm feelings for when he showed up in Spider-Man 3 played by a jittery Topher Grace. Venom isn't nearly the pop culture sensation he was in the nineties, particularly given how Marvel Comics overdosed on the antihero in that decade, and have thus far kept him on supporting casts in recent years. Series producer Avi Arad has kept Venom a top priority at Sony, forcing him into Raimi's third film instead of Raimi's preferred villain combo of Sandman and the Vulture, and teasing his arrival in the new films. But it's not like there are stacks of great Venom stories waiting to be told. Once you introduce his murderous enemy Carnage, you've painted yourself into a storytelling corner where you have to keep introducing symbiote-based characters like a clown car.

If there's any truth to this rumor, then it could be one of many dominoes falling. The announcement of The Sinister Six and the Venom movie were borne out of confidence for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Since that confidence was unwarranted, maybe Sony is putting the kibosh on Venom too. Or maybe the studio is just flat-out giving Spidey a rest. Spider-Man was a big deal because we saw the earlier movies at a time when the schedule wasn't littered with superhero movies. Sony should probably let us miss him a bit so that we can actually want him back. Populating his universe with interesting stories independent of his appearance might be the best strategy. The Sinister Six gives Sony the best opportunity to achieve this.

How Andrew Garfield found out he would no longer be Spider-Man

$

andrew garfield spider-manWhile Andrew Garfield earned a lot of new fans thanks to his turn as the lead of the Amazing Spider-Man franchise, sadly he is one of the biggest losers in the brand new deal between Marvel Studios and Sony.

With the wall-crawler heading to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the two companies have agreed to start fresh with a new face in the lead role, and that means Garfield is out. But how exactly did he hear the news?

The Daily Beast has the scoop on exactly how the Marvel/Sony deal went down from Andrew Garfield's perspective, and you may be surprised to hear that he didn't just get a phone call telling him he was out.

According to a source, there was apparently some talk at first about a way that could see The Social Network star "continue his involvement" with the new Marvel Cinematic Universe-direction that Spider-Man is taking. Ultimately, however, it was decided that it "didn't make sense" for Garfield to stay on and it was agreed that the parties would be splitting ways.

In the time since the big announcement from Marvel Studios and Sony, we've heard a good amount of information regarding the new direction that the Spider-Man character will go in, and it does make sense that Andrew Garfield will be cut loose. After all, it is being planned that the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the web slinger will be very young, and the Amazing Spider-Man star will be turning 32 this year. If the idea is to have the wall-crawling superhero's age be a sharp contrast to the likes of Captain America and Thor, it would be helpful to get an actor who is not only one year younger than Chris Evans and almost exactly the same age as Chris Hemsworth.

amazing spider man 2 Leaving Andrew Garfield behind is the right move for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it is a shame that it has to happen. While The Amazing Spider-Man movies were built on a poor foundation narrative-wise, Garfield was one of the best elements in both films and really put his own twist on both the Peter Parker and Spider-Man characters. Basically, he deserved a lot better than the quality that the two blockbusters ended up having.

As for who will be replacing Andrew Garfield as the cinematic web head, it may be a while before we find out. As we previously reported, Marvel and Sony are looking to find a director for the 2017 solo Spider-Man feature before they start looking for a lead actor, and we can assume that hunt is still very much in-process. That said, stay tuned in the coming weeks and months, as it's guaranteed we will be learning a lot more about this new movie series in that time.

8 Things We Learned About 'The Amazing Spider-Man'

spider-man

"The Amazing Spider-Man" was released Tuesday and is already shattering box-office records.

In two days, the Spider-Man reboot has grossed $59.3 million at theaters. Though that comes nowhere close to "The Avengers" two-day gross of $150.3 million, Spider-Man's well on its way to beating out the film's $207.4 million opening weekend.

Instead, she'll play cat and mouse with the Caped Crusader.

the dark knight batman

In addition, The Wrap reports Woodley's role as Mary Jane may have to be recast since she'll most likely be busy filming a sequel to next year's "Divergent" — a movie somethink may be the next "Hunger Games" success.

We can see her falling dramatically through the air.gwen stacy falling the amazing spider man 2
